This religion was found by Shakyamuni as per the Buddhist tradition. Another name for Shakyamuni is Siddhartha Gautam. He was born in 490 BC in a very rich family. He lived on the foothills of Himalayas in a royal palace. It is believed that from his birth he never lead a very normal life. It is believed that he was born from his mother’s hip while she was standing in a bunch of trees. We can say that Shakyamuni was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His every wish was fulfilled by his father and he tried to provide him a very lavish life by giving all kinds of facilities. His father wanted him to excel in his studies. Even Buddha was provided with a lot of luxuries and also married a beautiful woman but still he was not satisfied with his life. When he was 29, he left his palace 4 times to explore the world. During his first visit outside the palace, he came across a very old man who was unable to walk properly. In his second visit, he came across a sick person. During the third visit, he saw a dead man and he came across a wandering monk seeking truth behind religion in his fourth visit. Later these four things (old age, sickness, death and pursuit of religious truth) were known as the “Four sights”. After he met the monk, he left all his luxuries, his wife and his son to follow the same path followed by the monk (Herbert 2005). He wanted to explore more about the life outside his palace; he wanted to understand the sufferings common people face in day to day life. He started his search of enlightenment. According to the preaching of Buddhism, enlightenment is defined as the experience of true reality. Buddha in seek of enlightenment followed a much disciplined life.
