According to author of this book, cities can be treated to be the futures of the nations all over the world because of the reason that global urban revolution has taken place in the recent two decades which has changed the dynamics of business and social environment. Those cities that are known as mega cities of the world accommodate almost ten million people and the smaller cities are also experiencing high growth rates of population; all these can be interpreted as proof of urban development taking place at an international level. Author argues that many problems are caused by this influx of population, and among these problems poverty, unemployment, slums and poor governance are the major ones. In this book, ways to tackle many challenges are also presented by the writer. Pieterse further argues that, “the current ‘shelter for all’ and ‘urban good governance’ policies treat only the symptoms, not the causes of the problem”. There is a need to introduce democracy social resistance, environmental sustainability and economic reforms in the cities so that major concerns of people living there especially handicapped ones can be treated well. This book is also an unprecedented piece of work because it includes many necessary guides to deal with the challenges of 20th century. Great advices are given by Pieterse that contributes to promote advance and creative process of urban change. Pieterse remains successful in providing an alternative political agenda focused on urban development and also provides all the needed guidelines that are helpful in getting there[ See Page 84 of the book].
