Chopin started composing small works from an early age, especially the Polish Dance pieces. At the age of twenty he was completely aware of all the possible styles in playing and started composing serious works like G Minor Ballade at the age of twenty. As per Grove Dictionary, Chopin composed G Minor Ballade and B Minor Scherzo when in Vienna and were completed once he settled to Paris, although there are differences of opinion among other scholars. Composed for several years and dedicated to Baron Stockhausen, Ballade in G Minor is clearly the start of analysing musical form for Chopin. The ballade opens with Largo in 4/4 and chord D G Eb flowing into the deep web to burst into a stormy section. As the octaves rises in right hand, the ‘diminuendo’ running arpeggio slowly progresses to a point of silence, when C and F comes forward to build a bright and clear vision. The composition further drowns through octaves and triplets which further flows to the climax in F sharp minor accompanied by bass Bb. The superfast coda defined partly in the form of sonata essentially captures the joyous essence of the composition. It is rather a daunting task to figure out the exact situation that gave the idea to compose the Ballade. However one thing for sure, that Chopin was living amidst a literary circle. Moreover his inclination towards the work of Mickiewicz (Especially after publication Ballads and Romances in the year 1822) caused a great stir which may be considered as the primary foundation to initiate this towering work. Other works that inspired Chopin (as found) are: Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, Victor Hugo and Heinrich Heine(Swafford, 1992, p.246).
The influence of Polish folk ballads cannot also be refuted (Being a Polish) and moreover he was associated with Polish stalwarts such as: Joseph Elsner and Maria Szymanowska. Moreover his understanding of complex musical pieces of Loewe and Schubert is another crucial factor for his building of musical talent and preparing for the ballade. Many modern analysts also confirmed the fact that Chopin may have been highly influenced by Slavic folklore and other notable European poets during that time. Chopin used 6/4 and 6/8 meters in all his ballades. This is important to note that since rhythms with triple divisions are very much common in Polish folk songs, but there seems to be no association of standard melodies and ballads. From this point it can be analysed that as the ballads he was acquainted with does not have any structural poetic model, he took the liberty to implement different musical form in his ballads.
