When men are listening they are active and want to identify every detail of the conversation. Women are also active while listening but they are more concerned about talking because they want to spill their hearts out in front of the listener so they can feel relaxed and happy. Normally men are good listeners and this is the reason why they are good listeners. Women are normally not good listeners but speakers because they are concerned about their issues and want to discuss them with their partner so he can resolve those issues. Along with this the norms of the society play vital role in identifying the differences of the language and communication styles between man and women. Through the beginning of the life man are treated as strong and protectors of the family while women are the owner of the home. This norm is still being followed which gives male dominance in the society and women believe they can share anything with their partner (Tannen 142).
The major differences in the communication styles of man and women will be discussed now: women speak faster than man because they have so much to discuss and think they will lose time if they do not speak fast and this is opposite with man. They cover the important points in the conversation and don’t waste time in covering the least important issues. Women have a soft pitch and like to persuade the listener by their conversation. Women are emotional and they talk in a normal tone. Men are monotonous when they are speaking and use three tones. The social network of females is about communication and is heavily dependent on communication. Men are at a dominant position in many societies and the major reason behind this can be the norms of the society. Normally the society perceives men as silent, smart and active and this needs to be reflected during their conversations. From the beginning men have been given a prior position and this position has been maintained in today’s life style also. The language has been playing a major role in giving a highlighted position to men in the society. Even when the personalities of many males are not introvert and they like to communicate more they have to suffer with the norms of the society. Women like men that are smart and have a lighter tone while talking that is masculine in a sense. On the other hand women are viewed as social and when they talk they should have a lighter and smooth tone that gives ease to ears. This myth or norm is being followed in the society for years. Many girls that have genetically heavy voice like males are not liked and given resemblance with males. The society pressures and influences have emerged to an extent that this dominance is necessary and becomes the part of every individual’s life (Thomas and Warieng 89).
