The main query which arises is what the unique feature of the productive labor is if it is not the hallmark or the utility of the things produced by the productive labor. In order to answer this query it is essential that one must take into consideration the views of Smith regarding the role of the productive labor in the economy and with regards to the nature of the output produced by the productive labour what is the implication of that role. He saw them apart from their capability of generating profit and focused on their strategic role which for the productive labor is in fact a dual role in the economy. Moreover, primarily Smith has focused on the unproductive sector’s dependence on the productive members of the society for the purpose of subsistence. A surplus is produced by the productive hands over their own usage; a part of the surplus is rendered to the unproductive laborers for their support and also for the individuals who doesn’t contribute to the labor at all. Thus, it could be said that the surplus created by the productive sector is drawn upon by the individuals falling under the category of unproductive labor without making any contributions to its reproduction by their own activities. On the other hand, the emergence of surplus of resources available for the purpose of investment is dependent on the labor of productive workers just like the maintenance of the unproductive labor is dependent on the productive labor.
