After the Slum Sanitation project, there has been reduction in the open defecation in the major slum areas in Mumbai. More and more people have been using the block toilets which have improved the hygiene in the slums and have reduced the number of health disorders. Secondly, as a result of the Sanitation Projects, the people in the slums have been successful in getting a better access to the toilets. This is because, these are considered in the areas which are in their proximity. Thirdly, a large number of health related benefits has been observed. Fourthly, the environment is getting clean. Another major benefit of the mitigation of sanitation problems is the reduction of crimes. This is because over the years a number of incidents have been reported where the women who were defecating in open have to open awkward situations. Many a times, some shameful men who reside in the similar areas watch them while in some other conditions they even harness them. According to the survey conducted by the World Bank, around 600 million people in India defecate in open because they do not have any access to toilets. Among around 8.8 percent is in Mumbai alone. A large number among them is women. These women have to face the fear that they may be molested. Due to this reason many women do not eat much so that they don’t have to go for defecating in daytime.
